Estimated Living Expenses for one Semester at the University of Arizona
The following is an estimation of the living costs for one semester (5 months) at the University of Arizona. Please note that this is only an estimate and that these amounts may change. Based on this estimate, students should budget approximately $4,000 for living expenses while at the U of A. Students should follow up with the appropriate University department to determine the exact costs for the semester they will be attending the U of A.
UA Fees and Health Insurance
Although students participating the in North American Women’s Studies Program will not have to pay tuition to the University of Arizona, there are still some institution-specific fees that students are responsible for. These include a UA ID card, Orientation for international students, recreation center fee, SEVIS fee, and Arizona Financial Aid Trust. The total cost of these fees is approximately $200, although the amount may vary from semester to semester. Insurance costs vary from semester to semester, so check to find out how much it will be when you visit. Insurance coverage for the Fall 2006 (August 16-January 16) is $527. However, insurance costs for the Spring tend to be higher. Insurance for the Spring 2006 semester (January 16-August 16) was $627. Students should check with University of Arizona Campus Health Service to find out the exact amount.
Housing
On-campus housing is very limited at the University of Arizona, so most international students opt to stay off-campus. There are many options available for students, including a room in an apartment or house near campus. Rents for off-campus housing vary, although students can expect to pay $300-$500/month for a room in a shared apartment. Rent for a single apartment may cost as much as $600/month.
Books and Supplies/Miscellaneous
Students will need to purchase a variety of books and supplies for their study. Students should expect to pay about $390 for books and supplies in one semester. Students should also budget approximately $2,000 for miscellaneous costs, including food, transportation, clothing, and other essential items.

Living Stipend
For each visiting student, SIROW can offer up to $500 in financial assistance. To receive the stipend, you must contact the program coordinator, Lydia Breunig, at lydiab@u.arizona.edu. She will arrange to have the stipend applied directly to your UA bursar's account after your arrival. Be aware, however, that will be responsible for the required fees in order to register.
